I paid more attention to the contrast in this drawing then in my 'Altair' drawing. 
Great job
Two tips I do know is, one thing you can do is find some kind of picture you would like to draw and put a black&white filter on it and that will help you better see the contrast and values of the picture and will make it a little easier to shade and draw. You also can just squint your eyes at a picture you would like to draw, and that will define shaps and shadows more clearly.
